Made in LaGrange – Lake Area Designs

A Local Success Story in Hardwood Manufacturing

LaGrange, IN – Eleven years ago, a group of partners saw the potential in a small molding company in Sturgis, Michigan. With just seven employees, a handful of machines, and a few sales accounts, the business had room to grow. Recognizing an opportunity, partners Brian Miller, Danny Wingard, Steve Christner, and Bryan Copsey purchased the company, relocated it to LaGrange,. LaGrange offered the right conditions for expansion—tax incentives, available space, and a strong workforce.

Following the move to LaGrange, the business rebranded from Lake Area Moldings to Lake Area Designs to encompass a more board service of hardwood items to customers. Today, their product line has expanded beyond basic trim packages to include high-quality hardwood tables, chairs, trim, ladders, countertops, doors, mantles, beams, and accent wall features, while employing around 50 people and serving more than 20 customers, primarily in the RV industry.

What sets Lake Area Designs apart is its commitment to quality and efficiency. Every product is crafted in-house, from raw lumber to finished goods. Each week, truckloads of hardwood arrive at the facility, where they are ripped, molded, glued, cut, sanded, assembled, and finished—all under one roof. Handling everything in-house allows Lake Area Designs to maintain top-tier quality and provide outstanding service.

The RV industry is highly competitive, with constant pressure to keep costs low. To stay ahead, Lake Area Designs has reinvested in automation and advanced technology, streamlining production and reducing labor-intensive processes. This strategic approach has helped them remain a preferred supplier despite the threat of substitute materials.

But beyond business, the partners credit LaGrange for much of their success. The unwavering community support has allowed them to grow and find talented employees and reliable suppliers.

With a strong foundation and a focus on innovation, Lake Area Designs continues to thrive, proving that investing in people, quality, and technology leads to long-term success.
