Family Business Dedicated to Manufacturing Quality and Efficient Generator Sets for the Community
On a cold winter day, I had the privilege of visiting Helmuth Quality Power, located between Topeka and Millersburg. Despite the frigid temperatures outside, Howard Helmuth, the founder and co-owner, warmly welcomed me inside to meet the team and take a tour of the business.
Helmuth Quality Power began its journey in July 1982 as Helmuth Repair Shop, where Howard specialized in repairing small gasoline engines and gas and diesel tractor engines. Just over a year later, the business became a Lister Diesel Distributor. This growth enabled them to hire their first full-time employee and expand to offer onsite services and installations.
Over the next decade, Helmuth Quality Power expanded into building custom generator sets and providing the necessary electrical work to complete the packages. This growth was due to Helmuth Quality Power’s drive to address a void in the market for generator sets tailored to local commercial and agricultural needs. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the company refined its focus, specializing in generator sets for the prime power market. During this time, they partnered with a business in the Rocky Mountain region to produce generator sets mounted on trailers for use in remote locations. In 2018, Helmuth Quality Power further expanded its capabilities by obtaining an electrical license.
Throughout its growth and evolution, Howard emphasized the company’s commitment to producing high-quality, efficient products that promote sustainability within the community. Helmuth Quality Power achieves this by providing natural gas, propane, and diesel generator sets for both prime power (main power source) and standby applications (backup power source) while also offering comprehensive electrical services. The company primarily serves local commercial and agricultural businesses, which account for 95% of its market.
Today, Helmuth Quality Power is co-owned by Howard and his two sons, Leroy and Johnny. Another son, Lyle, works in the installation and electrical division. The company has grown to employ 23 team members, who produce 50–60 generator sets annually, ranging from 12 KW to 800 KW.
Today, Helmuth Quality Power remains focused on generator sets and electrical services, striving to create niche products that are efficient, durable, and tailored to customer needs. They currently operate three crews dedicated to electrical and installation work, along with a fleet of five trucks and service technicians to ensure ongoing product maintenance. Additionally, they offer a rental fleet of diesel and natural gas generator sets, ranging from 30 KW to 500 KW, available for both long-term and short-term rentals.
